A, an, the, and no article (zero article)



Here are definitions and exercises to review articles and when we don´t use articles.

We use article to define nouns.
Use a with singular, countable nouns that begin with a consonant.
  • A dog
  • A girl

Use an with singular, countable nouns that begin with a vowel.
  • An apple
  • An elephant
Use the with a specific noun, something one of a kind, or when it represents something earlier in a text.
  • The moon
  • The earth
We don’t use any article (zero article) with:
- languages
- name of sports
- name of academic subject
  • We speak English.
  • They like to play golf.
  • Our favourite class is grammar.

Common countable nouns don’t use articles in the following situations:

-Expressions with go and be.
  • She must be in school.
-Seasons
  • In spring we like to go to the park.
-Institutions: school, church, class.
  • Everyday I go to school.
-Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack
  • Breakfast was delicious.
-Time of the day: day, night, morning
  • We travelled at night.
