Past Passive



Here is an explanation and some exercises to practice the Past Passive.
 
Past Passive
was/were + past participle

We use the past simple passive to tell what happens to the subject.
The cake was eaten by Miss Christina.

María cleaned the classroom. (active)
                                 the object changes to the subject
The classroom was cleaned by María. (passive)
We use an active verb to say what the subject does:
  • The author wrote the book.

We use a passive verb to say what happens to the subject:
  • The book was written by the author.

Change the sentences into past passive.

1. Two girls broke the vase.
______________________________________________________________
2. My sister took the photographs
______________________________________________________________
3. The Egyptians built the Pyramids.
______________________________________________________________
4. Goya painted the beautiful painting.
______________________________________________________________
5. Engineers designed the bridge.
______________________________________________________________

Answer the questions using the words in the brackets. Use the past passive and by.

Example: Who wrote the play? (the children)
    The play was written by the children                                             

1. Who made the costumes? (the mothers)
                                                                                                    
2. Who painted the castle? (the art teacher)
                                                                                                    
3. Who played the music? (the school orchestra)
                                                                                                    
4. Who wrote the songs? (the music teacher)
